Caithness Beach Cleans
We started picking up plastic on 3rd March 2019, so far we have picked up 25 UK (Long) Tons
Our Projects:
There are many ongoing projects at the moment. Mainly to keep our beaches clean but reports are created (all done by volunteers) and there are intentions to perform dissections on local birds found dead on the beach.
Project 1. Beach Reports
On occasion, we do a beach report, this means that we take home the waste we have picked up and then list every item.
Currently the beach reports are sent to the local council but we are also talking to the Marine Conservation Society to see what they are looking for in a beach report.

Project 2. Dissections
So far, no dissections have been done in this area. We are waiting advice from the Marine Conservation Society to find out how they would like them done, what information is required, the format and the Health and Safety aspects.
It is so sad to see beautiful birds like this Gannet, laying dead on the beach. We have to know if it is our rubbish that is killing them.
Project 3. Education
Our local council has been really helpful in what we are doing. One of our team works at the recycling/landfill centre and has been instrumental in helping us with disposal of beach waste.
To date: we have attended two council meetings to let them know what we are doing and we hope that they will be helping out with litter pickers for the group as well as a grinder for heavy ropes and nets.
We are also trying to put Beach Cleaning boards at various points around Caithness.
